“Let’s Talk! Harry Potter and Religion”

Organizer: Marilyn Pukkila

Where & When: Belknap, Friday 5 PM- 6 PM

There’s been a lot of ink spilled about this topic, and some would say a lot more heat than light has resulted. Here’s a chance to explore the issues of religion, spirituality, and secularism in the Harry Potter series. After filling out a brief anonymous survey, you’ll have a chance to speak and to listen to what others have to say. The intention is dialog, NOT debate, in order to create a safe space to explore this fascinating topic.

Readings

God Give Them Peace

Author: Denzil Bee

Where & When: Blackstone Lounge, Friday 10 AM- 10:30 AM

Rating: G

Summary: On Remembrance Day Severus remembers his dead, forgives and finds forgiveness.

Warnings: This is a songfic based on the hymn What Shall We Pray, by the Carnwadric Parish Church and John L. Bell. It is thus Christian, but the ideas are not exclusive and I while this reflects my own beliefs, I support and embrace other faiths, for meaning is important and it is different for all.

Harry Potter and the Super Bowl Breach: The Hogwarts Exposed Timeline

Author: Andrew Goldish

Where & When: Blackstone Lounge, Saturday 2 PM- 3 PM

Rating: PG-13

Summary: This fan fiction is an alternate history timeline where the POD (point of departure from Book 5 as we know it) is the presence of a fictitious soft drink company filming a commercial for Super Bowl XXX from the deck of the ship at the time Harry flies past. By sheer chance, the camera picks up Harry on the broomstick (though the people filming the scene and the actors don't see anything). The wizards are not familiar with modern technology (naturally), and as a result do not realize that the Disillusionment Charm does not protect against detection by recording equipment such as video cameras.

Warnings: AU, Violent Situations

The Magic University Series

Author: Cecilia Tan

Where & When: Blackstone Lounge, Friday 2 PM- 3 PM

Rating: R

Summary: Kyle Wadsworth arrives at Harvard to discover he's magical and that he is actually attending Veritas, the hidden magical university on the campus.

Warnings: None

Death Eater Recruitment and Training

Organizer: The Dark Lord (Tom Forrister)

Where & When: Gilford, Thursday 11 PM- 12 AM, Friday 9 PM- 10 PM

Preface

Lord Voldemort is an archetype that has become a part of who I am, fused with my core identity. The Dark Lord archetype had been part of my nature before I took on Voldemort specifically, but the role fit like a glove from the moment I slipped it on through RPG, cosplay, acting, and now going beyond that into an active way of life.

For me, "dark" is not the equivalent of "evil." Despite my dark inclinations, I consider myself an ethical dark wizard, a dark shepherd to those who desire to express the darkness within themselves in a safe, understanding manner and environment. I am a proponent for embracing the Shadow self rather than denying or repressing it.

For these reasons, I have recently formed an organization that incorporates the hierarchical structure of the Death Eaters.

At Aeternitas 2011, I will be offering two training sessions and an initiation/re-dedication ceremony for those who feel called to be part of this group, The Order of the Dark Lord.

Death Eater Recruitment and Training

These sessions are for those who identify as Death Eaters, or who otherwise support the Dark Lord and want a piece of the action.

Bring your cosplay or role play experience to a whole new level in this combination of LARPing and lifestyling.

I will discuss the purpose and structure of the Order of the Dark Lord, protocols, drills, standing orders, intimidation techniques, and applying theatrical principles for combat and other dramatic effect.

Participants in the Death Eater Recruitment and Training session(s) will have the opportunity to compete in a contest for best Death Eater. The grand prize winner will receive a two-day park pass to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Death Eater Initiation and Re-Dedication Ceremony

Organizer: The Dark Lord (Tom Forrister)

Where & When: Blackstone Lounge, Saturday 11 PM- 12 AM

This event is by invitation only, for those Death Eaters who have gone through training with the Dark Lord. We are doing an initiation for new recruits, and a re-dedication ceremony for those who have previously identified as Death Eaters, but have not formally gone through this type of ceremony. The ceremony draws heavily on oaths of fealty and feudal rites. The ceremony will take place on the traditional Walpurgisnacht directly after the ball.
